Time for Trading

or should that be no time for trading.

Thursday 24 January

A losing day to report, Isiris main account bet - an unusual bet for them, going win only in what was effectively a two horse race but on the wrong one. SLH advised a lay on Classic Fiddle at even money, thought i had a chance coming to the last but he jumped out to his right, hampering Russian Around, but then going on to win well. Steve's all weather pick was Music Box Express. I was on at the morning price of 5/1, backed all the way down to 7/4 on the off but never looked like winning. I really need to be trading out of positions like this but I'm just so busy doing other things at the minute that I can't find the time. This will have to change going forward. I know what I want to do, it's getting to do it thats the biggest problem at the moment. Will work it all out eventually.

A welcome win but more of the same

Wednesday 23 January

Things just not going for me at the moment. Not doing any damage in terms of losing, however to finish the day behind having backed a 10/1 (less r4) winner is frustrating to say the least.

Mark Holder finally got back in the winners enclosure with Jaunty Flight at Huntingdon, although the 10/1 advised suffered a 10p rule 4 deduction (again). He advised a 1pt e/w bet on the winner, however in the same race he gave a 2 point each way bet on Marshalls Run (7/1), who was in third place on the run in but faded away to nothing to finish 5th, one place out of the money. Mark's other bet of the day was a speculative one on Island Flyer in the 1.40 at 33/1 which ran a fair race in finishing 6th.

Steve Lewis Hamilton's all weather pick today was Gimme Some Lovin at Lingfield, ran a great race but just couldn't get to the winner, however I collect on the place part having backed her each way at 12/1. His other bet was an each way on Solway Bee at Musselburgh, pulled up.

Optimum were also in action today but their disappointing run continued as Johnny Roach could only finish second.

Other bets to note, Mark Holder was keen on Ogee each way at Huntingdon so I had a small interest. Suffered the fate of all good each way bets and finished 4th.

Finally last nights football bet cost me £32.

Getting Nowhere

Tuesday 22 January

A win from SLH with Haroldini given out each way at an early 11/2, profit cut by 10p rule 4. Elsewhere Isiris gave out an insider, also each way. Looked to going best of all turning for home, but curled up dramatically in the final furlong and eventually faded out to be 5th, beaten a head and a short head for third place money. Also had an each way double on these two so lose another £50 there. Mathematician's best of the day was an each way on Kingsmaite who could do no better than finish 5th.

Finally for now, dropped another £40 having backed Mikhail Youzhny each way for the Australian Open last week, blown away today by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga who was in brilliant form again and could give Nadal a few problems in the semis.

Treading Water

Monday 21 January

Another day of pouring rain here in Yorkshire, whatever happened to snow, ice and fog in winter ?. However the meeting transferred to Folkestone survived all right along with the cards at Kempton and Wolverhampton.

Firstly to update yesterday's message, finished up with 3 from 5 correct in my bet and so a loss of £24. Unfortunately despite the Green Bay - New York Giants match finished 20-20 in normal time and therefore under 41.5 points, the points scored in overtime count on the points spread bet and therefore I was on a loser.

As far as the horses were concerned on Monday, Mathematician put up Bremen as his best bet of the day, finished second to the odds on jolly. Only the fav to beat but couldn't manage it unfortunately. SLH put up Height of Spirits unplaced at Kempton and Abraham Smith, a remote third Folkestone.

A Level Weekend

Sunday 20 January

As expected not too much action on the horses today with just the meeting at Wolves surviving. SLH gave Tanforan each way in the first, hampered early in the race and lost its position and never showed thereafter. Mathematician's best bet was an each way on Chatshow in the last, took an age to get going on the run for home, and eventually dead heated for third. Math's e-mail also gave favourable mentions to Xpres Maite and Royal Embrace in the first and Desert Lover in the second. Played to minimum stakes and with Xpres Maite winning for me at 10/1, managed to make £85 from these bets.

Have got an any 3 from 5 and an acca on the following Man City, Real Madrid, Ghana all under 2.5 goals, New England under 48 points, Green Bay under 41.5 points. Ghana scored a 90th minute goal to kill off the acca but the other two football bets are in, somehow !, and as I type this its 7-3 in the Patriots game with 10 minutes left of the second quarter. So with a bit of luck, might have a bit more profit to report tomorrow.

Delighted with Donny !!

Saturday 19 January

A small profit to record today thanks to my bets on todays football which I will come to later.

As for the tipsters, it was a losing day and a frustrating one at that. Henry Rix gave out Princelet in the Ascot 1.10 who ran a lousy race and was pulled up. SLH gave Prime Number each way at Lingfield, finished unplaced.

Mathematician put up two advices as joint best bets of the day and a split stake on each so Boomtown winning at 15/8 covered Approved Force losing at Ascot with a bit to spare.

The frustration came with the selections of Optimum and Mark Holder. Optimum put up an each way advice on Dark Corner at Ascot, was on at the early 7/1, backed in to 9/2 and, despite making two bad mistakes, was still well in contention when he broke down and was pulled up before the second last. Whether he would have beaten the winner is doubtful, but he would certainly have been placed had he managed to complete. Mark Holder's selection was Overclear in the last at Ascot. Looked to have the race in the bag despite a blunder at the second last, but he was done on the run-in by Earth Crystal going down by a 1/2 length. The each way money was landed again at the early 11/1, but would like to see one of these getting home in front before too much longer. Mark's given out 14 placed horses (over half of these at double figure prices, 7 of them finishing second) since he last advised a winner. That run goes back nearly 3 months now. Despite this I'm only £190 down on his advices, so just one winner would get me in front.

All adds up to a loss of £223 from the tipping lines today.

Personal trading was restricted to the football today and I really fancied Doncaster to beat Leeds. Had £100 on them at 10/3, with a £50 saver on the draw and a first half goal got the job done for me. Elswhere had a couple of 3/5's on a few draws and under/over 2.5 goals. Nothing too exciting, lost £8 on these. But a profit on the footy of £272 ensured a winning day overall.

Profit on day £49

Looking like a quiet day tomorrow with only the Wolves all weather card surviving. Maybe a bet from SLH but not expecting anything else. Might do a bit of trading, and also look for one or two sports bets - see if anything interests me.

Giving Some Back

Thursday 17 January

After a fantastic day on Wednesday, today was something of an anti-climax with a small loss on the day. 4 bets in total, Tapas Lad 2/1 winner given by Mathematician. Less said about the other three the better with Coleorton Dancer (Math) Jord and Treetops Hotel (both SLH), managing to beat one horse home between them !!

Loss on day £150

Friday 18 January

Lost £250 today but it could have been very different. Was on Curzon Prince (via SLH)at Wolves, caught right on the line to cost me a win of £275. Thought he'd just held on when I watched the race but as soon as I saw the freeze frame I knew my fate. Elsewhere Isiris gave out an Insider bet which was unplaced and Mathematician gave Mr Maxim, a loser at Catterick.

Loss on day £250

Hopefully, the weather will relent enough for tomorrow's cards at Haydock and Ascot to take place. Some excellent racing in prospect, so lets hope for a dry night.

A Memorable Day

Wednesday 16 January

What a difference a week makes. This time last week I had just missed an Isiris main account bet winner due to work commitments and it cost me nearly £500. Wasn't going to make the same mistake today as they gave out their first bet since. Another main account bet and an 8/1 winner advised each way backed in to 11/2 and a profit on the bet of £960. It didn't end there as SLH gave Sheer Fantastic each way at Kempton, a 6/1 winner to take the days profit well into 4 figures. The only setback was Optimum's tip Justwhateverulike who ran no sort of race and was pulled up, it later transpired he had broken a blood vessel.

This evening I had a bet on the under/over 2.5 goals in the football. Did any 3 from 5 and the acca, went with Man C under, Rangers, Newcastle and Havant over. Was struggling for a 5th game and eventually settled on Real Madrid overs, and as is often the case the makeweight team let me down. Still made a profit of £40 on the bet to round off a fantastic day.

Work To Do Again

Tuesday 15 January

Losing day again today with SLH offering Diane's Choice, advised at 4/1, finishing last although only beaten 2 lengths, and a win bet on Jomus at the early 5/1, eventually drifted out to an SP of 9/1 and finishing second beaten a neck. Mathematician wasn't that keen on the trappy Southwell card, but recommened minimum stake bets on Pappas Image and Keon at decent prices. Pappas Image finished 3rd at 8/1, beaten 2 short heads, but I backed it to win so nothing doing there either. Could have been a very good day with a bit of luck, but not to be today.

Losing Start to the Week

No bets at all from any of the services I subscribe to on Sunday, and I didn't get involved with anything myself either.

Monday 14 January

Just two today, with SLH going with Her Name Is Rio advised at an early price of 4/1 and drifting out to an SP of 8/1. Haven't watched the race but never in with a chance by the looks of the Racing Post comments. Mark Holder returned from his holiday on Saturday and gave out his first bet of the year. Unfortunately a familiar story with Harry Collins unplaced at 16/1.

Happy Days are Here Again !!

Saturday 12 January

Just two bets today, both from SLH. Mafeking, who has been put up twice before, won for me for the second time today at the advised price of 6/1. SLH also wanted to be with Lindop each way in the Kempton 2.15, but due to non-runners this wasn't possible. However he advised a minimum stake win bet at 5/1, either way the horse was 4th. Optimum put up a price dependent bet on Mister Quasimodo in the last at Kempton. However the horse never reached the minimum price of 6/4 and so I didn't back it.

Finally, it looks like someone was smiling on me today as I got my football bet up, any 3 from 5 and an acca on West Ham, Doncaster, Grimsby, Morecambe and Cheltenham. All won, with Morecambe and Cheltenham scoring in injury time !!!

Profit on day £880

Ready for The Weekend

Friday 11 January

Only one bet placed today, that was an each way advised by Optimum, on Northern Quest at Huntingdon and in keeping with how things are going this week it finished in 4th.

Elsewhere work intervened again today, however this time things were in my favour as I missed a losing bet on Harry Wood from SLH, along with a lay of The Polomoche who just prevailed at Huntingdon. In all, missing these messages probably saved me about £300 and along with a missed loser from Isiris last weekend means I'm just about level on the week in terms of bets missed.

In the long term of course I need to get myself better organised, as I was fortunate today and that will not always be the case. Still it's the weekend now, and hopefully the weather won't intervene too much and I can finally hit the winning trail this month.

Just The One Today

Thursday 10 January

Just one bet today. SLH advised a win bet on Cleveland at 9/2. Eventually sent off at an SP of 5/2 but could only finish third.

Loss on day £100

No time for trading again today. Haven't had a single trading session on Betfair this year, partly cos I was ill in the first few days and this week because I've been busy working. Not really how I want things to be, but I feel a bit stuck just now. A good day on Betfair could have earned me £100 today I'm sure. Indeed I am just over £1000 down so far this year, £100 a day - could cover that with trading the favs, assuming I maintain my discipline. Time and money management is the key to success here, at the moment I'm not doing very well with either. Got to get my act together !!!

A Miserable New Year So Far

Time to bring things up to date and things not going too well right now. Mixed results from the tipsters, together with shooting myself in the foot a couple of times and the account is taking a southerly track at the moment. £939 behind so far this month is easily retrievable, but I'm not exactly full of the joys today. Need to sharpen up my performance, get better organised, find more time to trade, trade more on the football and bet less, make the most of the price movements on the tips I'm getting, etc etc.

Sunday 6 January

Just two races today with SLH giving Kavatcha as a win bet and The Hardy Boy as a lay. Kavatcha drifted alarmingly before the race, then made the running for much of the way before folding quickly as they turned for home. Didn't see The Hardy Boy's race but he was unplaced and so reduced the loss on the day.

Loss on day £55

Monday 7 January

Again just SLH advising anything today, small stakes bet on Mon Chevalier at Taunton at 16/1 unplaced and the all weather service coming up with Granary Girl who managed to grab the each way money when third at 8/1

Loss on day £20

Tuesday 8 January

Poor day all round today. SLH advised a win bet on Cape of Storms at Southwell at 10/3, looked like collecting - traded as low as 1/6 in running, but run out of it in the last furlong. Then he advised a lay on Totally Scottish, given an awful lot to do by his jockey but managed to get up after the last. Then Isiris came up with a main account bet at Leicester which was unplaced, never put in the race. And then to round off a miserable day Chelsea scored in injury time thanks to an own goal to stuff my football bet.

Loss on day £586

Wednesday 9 January

If I thought yesterday was bad then I'm well pissed off today. Isiris gave out an insider bet, but I missed the call due to being tied up at work. Wasn't expecting a bet from them today today judging by the tone of KB's message last night. My own fault though, should have been ready. Horse was advised each way at 11/2, by the time I got the message the price was down to 10/3 and I wasn't going to take that. Off course it won and I missed out on a £495 payout. Not happy. I did miss a loser from them the other day, so I guess things will even up over the long term but I really didn't need that this week. Other two bets today were on SLH's all weather service Fusili at Lingfield, third at 14/1 and Feeling Fresh unplaced at Wolves tonight.

Loss on day £10

Will be at home tomorrow afternoon, so might do a bit of trading on the favourites, as well as backing the tips. Hopefully I can get things moving in the right direction. Onwards and upwards.....

Late Setback

Saturday 5 January

A losing day to report today despite a main account winner from Isiris. Their 5/2 each way advice passed the post in front, a bit fortunate to collect but don't think I've had the best run of luck recently so very welcome. Elswhere SLH advised an each way double on Calgary Bay and Quarry Town for a small profit on the bet, the all weather service gave Mafeking, a winner last time it was advised, but not today.

Money back job from Optimum with Principe Azzurro advised each way and finishing third. Mathematician keen on The Luder at Chepstow but nothing doing there, and finally Henry Rix played Esprit De Corps and Idarah in the same race at Sandown but both finished unplaced.

Profit from the tipsters £61.

Personal trading was all on the football today, with a loss of £110. Was looking good with 5 minutes to go, as I along with plenty others was on Brechin to beat Berwick. 2-0 up after 85 minutes then it all went wrong. What can you do ?

Loss on day £49

Feverish Friday

Well that's me rather than the action today. However it was a winning day.

SLH gave Fresh Mint on his all weather service which won nicely at 11/4, whilst Isiris gave out a losing insider bet which finished second.

Off To A Slow Start

Not a great start to the year healthwise as I seem to have been struck down by a nasty dose of man flu. Came down with it on New Years Eve and been struggling to shake it off ever since. Spent most of the new year in bed so far, hence no messages until today.

Trading is a no no while I feel like this and so I'm restricting myself to the tipping lines and the odd bet of my own until I'm back to full strength.

Quick update on the first few days of 2008....

Tuesday 1 January

Feel absolutely shocking today, and certainly nothing to do with how much I had to drink last night. Mercifully not too much activity from the tipping lines with only Optimum and SLH in action today. Optimum gave an each way bet on Charlies Future at Exeter. The early 14/1 evaporated into an SP of 7/1 and the horse ran well enough before eventually finishing 5th. The SLH all weather advice was Only A Grand at Southwell. This finished unplaced but I didn't see the race as I was back in my pit by then.

One football bet today, a £100 double on Rotherham and Wycombe which comes unstuck as Wycombe draw 0-0.

Loss on day £300

Wednesday 2 January

Two horses again today with SLH on Happy As Larry at Wolves carrying my money and not really happy with the run I got. Not much luck in running and never able to challenge the front two he eventually stayed on to be a never nearer third. Mathematician was keen on Mika's Fable at Folkestone, indeed this was their first main account bet for some time. Unfortunately the horse faded out of contention in the home straight and was unplaced.

Played an each way double on Mika's Fable above, and Kirkside Pleasure at Ayr as well as backing Kirkside Pleasure so another £80 down on my personal account.

Todays football was much better however as I backed Hamilton, Airdrie, Raith, East Fife, Forfar and Stenhousemuir in various Trixies, 4folds, 5folds and an accumulator. Only Forfar let me down so I profited to the tune of £206 on my bets.

Loss on day £74

Thursday 3 January

Again just two bets and very little movement on the account.

Isiris gave out a main account bet, each way third at 11/4 so a loss of £45 on the bet, SLH gave out Bazroy each way at Lingfield, I was on at the advised price of 8/1 (Ladbrokes best) and so missed out when he drifted to an SP of 12/1 and finished second, rattling home to be beaten a length. Nevertheless a £50 profit on the bet.

Profit on day £5

Looking Back and Looking Ahead

New Years Eve is always a time to reflect on life, and for me never more so than this year.

Personally 2007 has been the worst year of my life. I lost my Mum in July after a long and brave battle against breast cancer. I can't even begin to describe the effect her death has had on me and the rest of the family. Even now six months later it is still hard to believe she is no longer around.

I've spent the last few days of the year helping Dad move in to my sister's home and to clear out Mum and Dad's house which has now been sold. We've spent much of the last few months sorting things out, Mum wasn't one for throwing things away and so lots of memories of childhood and our lives over the last 30 years have been re-kindled.

It's been an emotional time for us all, but it's a new year now and time to get on with things.

Last summer I was able to take time out to think about where my life was going, and this blog was one of the by-products of this. I wanted to try and move towards making more money from betting and spend less time working and more time enjoying life. Started on the journey on the 1st of October with a clean sheet of paper, a few tipping line subscriptions, some trading software, multiple betting accounts and £6000 in the bank.

If you read the blog for the last three months there have been plenty of ups and downs, mistakes on my part, mood swings, big profitable days, big losing days. But the overall figure shows a profit of £3750 in three months. Basically this pretty much covers the costs of the tipping subscriptions , indeed the amount I won during the last week in September covered the rest. So from 1 January I can start with a clean slate. There will be renewals of the subscriptions during 2008, except for Isiris which is already paid to the end of 2008.

For 2008, I am aiming for a profit of £24,000 by the end of the year. This is before any expenses (subscriptions, phone calls etc) are taken into account, so hopefully I can clear over £20,000. It's an ambitious target and one that will take some achieving, but I think it is possible.

One thing that I will need to do is increase my staking as the projected winnings from the tipsters will be eroded considerably by the subscriptions. For example, in their new year message Optimum Racing forecast a profit for the year of between 50-100 points. At £50 per point this equates to £2500 - £5000. If the figure is at the lower end of the forecast then the yearly subscription will take nearly half the profit. I think I can assume the rest of the services will achieve a similar outcome, and so a revision to the staking plan is required. I have more money available to put in the kitty, so that's not a problem. One thing I must do is have more trading sessions, I have done very little trading over the last 5-6 weeks and that is no good to me. I reckon I need to be making £200 a week to reach my target, allowing for holidays etc.

Need to spend a few days refining my approach for 2008, but I think I know where I am headed for now.

At present I am still going to be very busy workwise as things stand now, but this is something else I need to look at in 2008. I am planning on moving house late this year / beginning of next year if the property I am looking for comes through, and therefore I need to be able to get a mortgage so I don't want to mess that up - another thing to ponder.

Well that's it for now. Thanks for reading. Hope that 2008 is all that you want it to be.
