Nothing special about these big meetings !

Friday 5 June

Another big meeting, another day spent doing my brains !

Tipping Legends failed to find a winner on the first day of their Epsom special, indeed they didn't even get a place.

That doesn't tell the whole story though - anyone who's been reading the blog for a while will know that I have an aversion to each betting and this afternoon showed why. No fewer than four of their each way selections finished fourth.

The last race at Epsom was particularly frustrating with Parisian Pyramid trading at 1.82 in-running for the win, and getting caught right on the post for third place ! Not sure of the wisdom of advising two horses each way in a 15 runner handicap though (the other was 5th)

Maths had two seconds from his selections at 16/1 and 9/1, the second beaten by the horse he put up as a saver - which I didn't back !

Maths account bet showed a profit when Tartan Gigha won the 2.10, but the main stake was lost on Bencoolen who usually races prominently, but held up today and never sighted.

Equine Investments had a second and a third with Look Here - beaten two noses having traded 1.05 in running.Frustration all round really, although there were one or two highlights.

A day to forget, and hope for better things tomorrow.

Hi JP

Enjoying the blog as ever.

I find it particularly interesting when you mention how difficult you find getting certain stakes on with certain bookies (you recently mentioned Ladbrokes have been a problem). You also sometimes mention bookies that you basically don't even bother with because they barely lay you a price.

So if you get a few minutes on an upcoming post, would you mind going into a little more detail on this? At what point did you start noticing bookies restrict your stakes? Are there some bookies who will continue to give you whatever bet you want? Which are the bookies that are particularly cautious? Perhaps most importantly, do you have any tips on how to avoid bookies restricting your bets? (Is it best never to withdraw funds for example? Or maybe it's useful to throw in a few tiny bets to bring your average stake down??).

Obviously totally understand if you don't want to disclose this, or haven't got the time or inclination to, I was just wondering really, because I'm now putting on around £30-£60 a race on horses at prices up to 16/1 and wouldn't mind a few pointers.

Thanks in advance, all the very best to you, CD.

hI CD, nice to hear from you again. Just had a read of your blog and it looks like things are going real well for you :-)

Yes, getting on has become an increasing problem for me. I have (or had) internet accounts with all the bookies listed on Oddschecker and also have credit accounts with the Big 3 and one or two others.

I've been doing this at this level since October 2007 and while I've had the odd restriction imposed on me, mainly by the smaller firms I hadn't had too many problems as long as I spread the bets around a bit.

In the last 2-3 months though, these restrictions have become more widespread.

With the exception of Bet365 who take pretty much I ask for, most of the others are cutting me.

Obviously, I go to who ever is the biggest price (which obviously they don't like !!)

William Hill won't let me place bets that take out more than £150, Corals £250 (restricted in the last week), Ladbrokes varies from race to race, Stan James and Betfred won't let me win more than £20 ! (that's win, not place bets of that size), Sportingbet are a complete waste of time.

Skybet and Boylesports lay bits, but not as much as I want.

Tote are not too bad, as long as you don't ask for too much.

Bluesquare adjust their prices every five minutes according to what Betfair are doing, but will lay bits.

Victor Chandler closed my account last month.

The three credit accounts I have - Ladbrokes are usually ok but put me on hold while they referred to their trading desk the other day, and William Hill and Coral refer every bet I ring through.

You get used to it, but it is bloody annoying especially with the amount of bets I place every day.

It is still workeable though at the moment, although it's only a matter of time before I won't be able to get anything on.

Ways round it - well there's Betfair but there's generally not enough liquidity at the time I want to place bets.

All the accounts I have are in my own name, but there's the option of using family and friends to open accounts. Might keep me going a bit longer.

Cash bets in the shops, but even there they ring through to the trading desks before acceptance. To be fair I've only been in a bookies once in the last 12 months and don't like the idea of carrying large amounts of cash on me.

I've not really thought about whether leaving money in the accounts makes any difference, I've got so much money flying in and out anyway I wouldn't have a clue if that had any influence - I doubt it to be honest.

I'm going to have to come up with various ways to combat, because it's only going to get worse.

It is my intention to go full time eventually, which will hopefully give me more options, at least timewise.

In your situation, I would just advise you to spread the bets as much as you can, keep records of who you bet the winners with and keep away for a bit when you take them for a decent win.

Hope this is of some help, but if you've got any more thoughts give me a shout.

JP
